Spiritual Uplift 7/11/07

Your Spiritual Muscle! July 11, 2007

“It We should daily feel a deeper union with Life, a greater sense of that indwelling God–the God of the seen and of the unseen–within us.”

–Dr. Ernest Holmes–

Practice makes perfect. Ask any athlete the reason she practices, and you will hear that she seeks to enhance her strength, stamina, endurance, or coordination. Ask a musician or artist the same question, and he will tell you that he is striving to improve his technique or to expand his expression of the beauty of his work. Spiritual people also practice their craft, and many would say it is in order to expand their understanding of the creative power of the universe or to more deeply commune with that power. Every spiritual tradition has its own specific spiritual practices: the dances of the Sufi, the chanting of the Buddhist, the quiet contemplation of the Quaker, to name a few. Religious Scientists also teach and employ spiritual practices that enhance our experience of Life, such as Spiritual Mind Treatment (affirmative, scientific prayer), meditation, and visioning. When practiced often–say, daily–these activities bring us in close connection with the divinity within and around us. Others may also find compassionate service, forgiveness, communion with nature, or celebrations of successes large and small are practices that serve their spiritual growth.

Dr. Ernest Holmes, the founder of the Science of Mind and Spirit movement, says, “We do well to listen to the Inner Voice, for it tells us of a life wonderful in its scope; of a love beyond our fondest dreams; of a freedom which the soul craves.” Isn’t this worth spending some time every day exercising our spiritual muscles?

“Keep fresh before me the moments of my High Resolve, that in good times or in tempests, I may not forget that to which my life is committed.”

–Howard Thurman–.
